Winter Gardening

Many people see the winter as a time to close down the garden and wait until the spring to start up gardening activities again. There are plenty of things you can be doing through the winter months to continue enjoying the pleasures of your garden.

Winter is an important period in the gardening season, more so than you’d think, when it is in full swing, compost is continuing to decompose and get ready for use for the spring. Additionally, winter is a great time to grow cover crops which will help improve the soil for the next season.

There are also plenty of plants that can be planted and grown during the winter, both indoors and out. Also, we can help you strategically plan a winter garden so that you can enjoy colour and attractive plants all year long.

The main way to add interest to a winter garden is of course with plants. However, the plants that work to make an interesting winter garden are not necessarily known for their foliage and flowers.

Our consultation will give you a list of plants that will add interest to your winter garden as we will use our imagination to create a beautiful winter landscape for you.

Coping with snow in your garden

You can use our services throughout the year, if you would prefer to see us in Spring then here are some tips for your garden:

  • Knock off snow from evergreens and conifer branches as there is a danger bent branches won’t rebound, be careful not to stand directly beneath the branches when doing this!
  • It’s too late to put bubble wrap around containers to help insulate plant roots, but you could move them next to a house wall or porch.
  • It’s best to avoid watering or feeding plants in pots and containers, even if it’s windy, until the weather thaws.
  • Ponds in which fish are kept or that have a large build-up of sediment or leaves do need oxygen; continue to run water features to keep a section ice free and the water circulating.
  • Defer pruning grasses until warmer weather, they will give structure to the winter garden and provide protection for beneficial insects.
  • Check the temperature in your greenhouse to maintain frost-free conditions for plants such as citrus.
  • For indoor plants avoid overwatering and sudden drops in temperature.
  • Winter vegetables such as Brussels sprouts and parsnips should be fine but beware - some might rot after prolonged freezes, take care that stored produce, including fruit, doesn’t freeze.
